Information Education & Communication (IEC)

Objectives:

To raise awareness, improve knowledge and understanding among the general population about AIDS infection and STD, routes of transmission and method of prevention

To promote desirable practices such as avoiding multi partner sex, condom use, sterilization of needles/ syringes and voluntary donation of blood.

To mobilize all sectors of the society to integrate messages and programmes on AIDS into their existing activities.

To develop and support IEC needs of NGOs working with various focused groups

To create a supportive environment for the care and rehabilitation of persons with HIV/AIDS

Performance:

To achieve the above objectives following modalities are used:

  • AIR-Spots, Jingles, Interviews, Panel discussions and radio magazines
  • Press Advertisement
  • Hoardings at constructed ST-bus stations
  • Wall writing on the walls of PHC/CHCs and District Hospitals
  • Street Plays, Bhavai
  • Exhibitions
  • Development of IEC materials like Posters, Folders, Stickers and Leaflets
  • Banners
  • Satellite linkages
  • Doordarshan Spots
  • Exhibition units

The Communication Needs Assessment study (CNA) was conducted by TALEEM Research Foundation in 2000. Also, National Level Baseline Behavioral Survey for the general population was conducted by NACO in 2001.

On the basis of the recommendations of both these studies and as per the guidance of members of IEC-Sub committee Gujarat State AIDS Control Society carried out their activities for awareness in the state.
