Blood Safety |
Blood banks reports to NACO mainly on the details of blood donation by gender, type of blood donation (voluntary or replacement) and sero-positivity on 5 mandatory tests among screen blood units and supply of blood components separated.
Reporting Status
Overall reporting from blood banks in government, private and voluntary sector is 84 percent in the reporting quarter (January to March, 08). The districts Amreli, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Patan, Surendranagar &Valsad have reported 100% while Navsari, Mehsana & Dang have reported less than 70% during the quarter. |

The above analysis indicates that the collection in charitable blood banks is more than 70% while it is less than 20% in Gov. & Pvt. Blood banks. The total collection has decreased from Jan. to Mar’08 while the proportion of charitable blood banks has increased up to 74% in Mar’08.
Proportion of Blood Collection: Voluntary Vs. Replacement
Proportion of voluntary blood donation among the reported blood banks including government, private and charitable is analyzed for 152 blood banks. The chart below shows the Proportion of Blood Collection –voluntary and replacement aggregated for the Gujarat State.

In the reporting quarter Jan. to Mar’2008, total 139338 units of blood is collected out of which 96646 (69%) is through voluntary blood donation. However when the analysis is done separately for private, government and charitable blood banks, the picture changes. The percentage of voluntary blood donation is 46 in government blood banks, 24 percent in private blood banks and 80 percent in charitable blood banks during the quarter. |

he percentage of voluntary Blood Donation of all the districts ranges starts from 31 percent in Banaskantha to 100 percent in Dang. Voluntary blood donation in Navsari & Bharuch is more than 90% while in Amreli, Valsad, Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagadh, Kheda, Panchmahal, Surat & Mehsana it is more than 80% and in Kachchh, Patan, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Surednranagar & Banaskantha it is less than 60%. The overall voluntary blood donation of Gujarat is 69% during the quarter. |

The above graph shows that the voluntary donation is less than 40% in Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Banaskantha and Narmada districts while it is between 40 to 60% in Kachch, Patan & Gandhinagar and in other districts it is more than 60% during the quarter.
Trends in Positivity: All Essential Tests
The chart below shows the detailed % of all essential tests information for all the districts. |

In the quarter, the positivity rates for HIV, Hepatitis C & VDRL range between 0.2 & 0.3 percent. High rates are reported for Hepatitis B at 1%. Malaria reported 0 percent positivity. |

The percentage blood components supplied in the reporting quarter are 58 percent packed cells, 24 percent Fresh Frozen Plasma, 16 percent Platelet Rich Plasma and 2 percent cryoprecipitate.
